The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows: Words for those feelings you could never describe
Ever felt an emotion so unique, so profound, but found no words to express it? You know what it feels like, but you don't know how to describe it? We all have. In this boundlessly emotional world we inhabit, there come moments when we cross paths with feelings so profound, that they escape the grasp of our vocabulary. These silent whispers of the heart, although universally shared, are often lost in translation due to our language's limitations. And that's where 'The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows' comes in. Starting from a little corner on the Internet, it got so popular that it turned into a YouTube channel and then a book.
The Genius Behind the Obscure
'The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows' was spawned in 2009 and has since evolved, turning into a YouTube channel and later, a book. Koenig's work is rooted in his etymology research, using prefixes, suffixes, and root words to name the nameless yawning within us all.

By venturing into uncharted territories of our emotional spectrum, 'The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows' has ignited conversations, inspired art, and reminded us of our shared human experience on multiple platforms. These words have created a place in our daily talks, filling our emotional world with feelings that didn't have a name before.

A Lexicon of Unuttered Feelings
As you flip through this dictionary, you'll stumble upon words that put a name to those feelings you could never quite explain. One such term is 'Sonder' - the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as yours. One evening, I was sitting in a crowded café, engrossed in my own thoughts and absorbed in my own world. As I looked around, I suddenly had a moment of sonder.
I began to observe the people around me - the barista behind the counter, the couple engrossed in conversation at a nearby table, the student buried in their books. It struck me that each person had their own unique story, their own dreams, fears, and experiences. They were living lives just as intricate and complex as my own.
At that moment, I felt a profound sense of interconnectedness with the people around me. I realized that we are all the protagonists of our own lives, navigating our own challenges and triumphs. It was a humbling realization that reminded me to be more empathetic and understanding towards others.
Another is 'Anemoia', a nostalgia for a time you've never known.
Growing up, I was always drawn to vintage photographs and old movies. There was something enchanting about the fashion, the music, and the overall atmosphere of past eras. I would spend hours immersed in these nostalgic glimpses of a time I had never lived in.
One particular memory stands out vividly in my mind. I stumbled upon a box of my grandparents' old photographs tucked away in the attic. As I carefully flipped through the sepia-toned images, a wave of anemoia washed over me. I felt a longing for a time I had never experienced firsthand, yet somehow felt connected to. The photographs captured moments of joy, love, and everyday life from a bygone era. I found myself yearning to step into those scenes, to feel the warmth of the sun on my face, and to be a part of those simpler times. It was a bittersweet feeling, a mix of nostalgia and longing for a world that existed before my time.
Perhaps the most profound emotion that I've encountered is 'Trumspringa', the longing to wander off your career track in pursuit of a simple life—tending a small farm in a forest clearing, keeping a lighthouse on a secluded atoll, or becoming a shepherd in the mountains—which is just the kind of hypnotic diversion that allows your thoughts to make a break for it and wander back to their cubicles in the city.

Several months into my university life, there came a point where a feeling of restlessness began to creep in. Each day seemed like a carbon copy of the previous one – same classes, same assignments, and exams. It was easy to feel trapped in the mundanity, driving my thoughts to fantasize about a different life.

I saw myself amidst wild nature, far removed from the hustle and bustle of city streets. The life of a shepherd in the mountains intrigued me. I imagined a serene existence of guiding my flock through pastures, living in a cozy cabin, and watching the sunset painting the sky with hues of orange and pink against the backdrop of mountain silhouettes. The peaceful symphony of nature surrounded me, the wind whistling through trees, disrupted only by the distant calls of nocturnal creatures, was a welcome departure from the constant hum of city traffic I was used to. The absence of city lights allows the stars to shine brightly, creating a breathtaking celestial display that fills me with wonder and awe.
A life unburdened by the pressures of modern society, free from the shackles of a 9-to-5 routine, was temptingly appealing. This craving to break free from the accustomed, to indulge in an alternative experience, I later discovered, is perfectly embodied by the term trumspringa.
The linguistic beauty of 'The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows' extends far beyond just the terms it puts forth. It gives voice to our deepest tendencies and impulses, recognizes the nuances of our emotional spectrum, and consequently makes us feel understood.
It leaves us with the comforting realization that even our most obscure feelings are a shared human experience, bridging the unknowable gap between our individual worlds. The Dictionary stands as a testament to the complexity of our emotional realm and sheds light on the sorrows that bind us all.
