Life sentence

LIFE SENTENCE

Life Sentence is an order of imprisonment to criminals who have committed specific crimes remain in prison for the rest of their lives or indefinitely until they are forgiven, paroled or commuted to a fixed term. The UK, USA and our neighbouring countries like India, Myanmar and our country itself have the law regarding this. In Bangladesh, it is usually used on criminals who committed crimes such as murder, theft of natural treasure, drug trafficking, human trafficking, rape, etc.

The punishment- Life Sentence- for someone who committed murder is usually something that comes to mind along with the death penalty. Because of life sentence, lots of people get spared with their life. In the event that someone commits murder, they usually don’t get hanged, rather they get life sentence as their punishment. To sum up everything I stated so far elucidating the impression that life sentence is a better alternative if not a better punishment. I wonder how giving someone Life Sentence isn’t a crime itself as it violates the rights of a human’s life! And if it's taken into custody then it would become a cycle as it would need someone to punish the judge for violating one’s human right in which the judge would get a life sentence and so on and so on. We should concentrate on changing the offender's behaviour rather than just making him pay for the crime-committed. Or after serving a minimum term, offenders should be eligible for parole. Hence, I don't agree with the concept of life sentence being a thing.
As per https://www.robertreeveslaw.com/blog/life-sentences/#:~:text=Portugal%20was%20the%20first%20country,and%20Republic%20of%20the%20Congo, Portugal is the first country where Life Sentence was banned in 1884 by Francisca Van Dunem. Other countries like Mexico, Spain, Vatican City, Norway, Serbia, most South and Central American countries, Mozambique, and Republic of the Congo have also banned it. I propose the idea of rehabilitation as it is a lot more humane. The idea of people rotting behind bars seem a torture to me. That's where rehabilitation should take place. Treatment or training of the criminals who violated the law can make a capable returning of the offender to the community as a law abiding citizen without being a threat to the country. (www.britannica.com) As a fellow human, I cannot get myself to endure the pain of others. Especially if they are being tortured. Prison is a place not made for people to enjoy. It's made for them to suffer. And to put a living-breathing-healthy human there for the rest of his life is inhumane. There isn't a single person who would like to go to that place let alone live there for the rest of his life. I get that the offender committed a crime or even a few mistakes but everyone deserves a chance, everyone deserves forgiveness. A murderer can’t murder with a healthy body or mind, he must be mentally disordered hence he should get treatment or training not punishment, at least not like this punishment. That would help the criminal make himself a better human-being.
